Asthma:
This class explains characteristics of asthma, its causes and effects, and treatment methods
for those who suffer from this condition.
A key topic is Asthma Management, which addresses preventive controls of asthma, by first
explaining the physiology of an attack, the common causes that trigger an attack, and their
warning signs. Participants learn about treatments and medical devices, such as inhalers and
peak flow monitors, that are used to avoid triggering factors and minimizing asthma attacks.
All members, including children, who suffer from asthma or who are interested in learning
more about it are welcome to attend.
Diabetes:
The Diabetes Series comprises two classes dealing with the proper management of diabetes
for insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetics.
- The first class provides an overview of diabetes, including a general definition, types,
symptoms, and risk factors involved. Participants learn about the basic treatment, such
as the types of medication, and monitoring for proper management of diabetes. They focus
on exercise and living with diabetes; discuss ways to manage the everyday complications
that might develop from the disease.
- The second class explains the elements of diabetic diet:
basic nutrition, timing of meals, portion control, and meal
planning. Participants explore healthy eating habits and ways to
enjoy a healthy diet.
This series is designed for newly diagnosed diabetics or people who would like to know more
about diabetes management. Participants are encouraged to bring family members to class as
part of a team effort to manage the disease.
Hypertension & Healthy Heart:
This 90 minutes course examines hypertension and heart related health. Attendees gain an
understanding of the heart and its role in the circulatory system, emphasizing hypertension
and its monitoring. Symptoms of hypertension and its effects on the body are identified,
as well as controllable and uncontrollable risk factors. Participants cover guidelines for
an effective treatment of hypertension, including nutrition, exercise, stress-management,
medication, and smoking cessation. Finally, they discuss maintenance and application of
treatment guidelines to achieve their personal health goals. Members and their families,
interested in learning about hypertension and practical ways to manage it, are all welcome.
Smoking Cessation:
This course investigates the harmful effects of tobacco to the body, especially in relation
to heart disease and cancer among U.S. residents. Participants assess their individual
smoking habits and develop plans to quit. They discuss lifestyle issues of non-smokers,
such as weight gain, stress management, and an overall healthy attitude. The class will
also address relapse prevention, providing tips on how to stay non-smoker. All members who
recognize the need to quit smoking are encouraged to attend.
Stress Management:
Stress is a natural part of life; but negative stress suffering over a long period of time
can bring on illness and disability. While stress can motivate and enact positive changes,
too much of it and the lack of a healthy coping mechanism can lead to a permanent debility.
The trick is not to let daily stress negatively impacting one's life.
Stress Management class presents the effects of stress on the body. It also teaches
techniques to manage daily hassles and major-life events. This class explores stress
management by analyzing stressful situations and means to reduce and to release stress
as it occurs.
Weight Management:
To end the struggle over weight management (losing or gaining weight), this class focuses
on healthy habits. Attendees calculate their individual weight standards and derive ways
to achieve realistic healthy goals. They examine the meanings of a healthy lifestyle in
terms of nutrition, exercise, behavior modification, stress management, and social occasions.
At the end of the course, participants gain useful tips to apply their weight goals in
every day situations. All members interested in weight management are welcome.
